Sitework estimating measures and prices site preparation, earthwork, utilities, drainage, paving, and associated improvements within an agreed boundary. Existing and proposed surfaces establish quantities; geotechnical conditions, haul arrangements, access, and construction methods affect the cost of executing that work.

A volume needs a surface definition

Cut and fill quantities depend on existing and proposed elevations, stripping depth, unsuitable materials, pavement sections, and the boundaries of the calculation. Identify the survey date, grading revision, and the surfaces being compared. A plan area cannot establish an excavation volume without depth information.

Keep bank, loose, and compacted volumes distinct. Shrink and swell adjustments should come from project information or an agreed assumption; they are not interchangeable units. Retain the net calculation so later geotechnical decisions can be reconciled.

Caliche is a question for the ground investigation

University of Arizona Cooperative Extension describes caliche as soil cemented by calcium carbonate and notes that not all desert soils contain it. That supports a careful estimating question, not a claim that every Arizona site requires rock excavation.

Review boring logs, test pits, geotechnical recommendations, and the contract's treatment of differing site conditions. Identify uncertain excavation methods or material classifications in the basis of estimate. A city name or neighboring project is not a substitute for site-specific ground information.

Material balance is not the same as haul cost

An apparently balanced site can still require import or export because materials are unsuitable, construction phases differ, or stockpiling space is limited. Establish where material can be reused and how it will move through the site.

Haul distance, disposal acceptance, truck cycle, loading, traffic, tipping fees, and material condition can affect cost. Record the source and destination assumptions rather than hiding them inside a generic excavation unit rate.

Dust control belongs in the defined site scope

Maricopa County's published guidance identifies a dust-control permit requirement for disturbance of at least 0.1 acre. Its permit guidance also discusses haul/access roads and staging or storage areas. Check the current rule and the actual project footprint with the responsible authority.

For estimating, identify which party covers application, water supply, control measures, access management, and ongoing compliance activities. These are scope questions; this page does not determine permit applicability or provide a legal interpretation.

Resolve the utility and civil interfaces

Civil work can overlap plumbing, electrical, concrete, and landscape packages. Assign trenching, bedding, shoring, backfill, testing, connections, surface restoration, and temporary service responsibility. Locate the point where site utilities transition to building systems.

Can earthwork be estimated without a geotechnical report?

A qualified preliminary budget may be possible, but soil classifications, reuse, compaction, and excavation method can remain uncertain. Identify those assumptions and avoid presenting the result as a resolved ground-risk assessment.

Are all cut volumes reusable as fill?

No. Suitability depends on the material and project requirements. Geotechnical recommendations and the construction sequence determine whether cut material can be reused, processed, stockpiled, or must be exported.

Should a caliche allowance be added to every Arizona project?

No. The presence, depth, and character of caliche are site-specific. Use available ground investigation and document unresolved conditions instead of applying a universal allowance.

Is dust control included with excavation?

It may be assigned to a different party or general conditions. Confirm ownership, duration, water supply, and required measures in the scope matrix before comparing quotations.

What drawings are needed?

Provide the current survey, grading, drainage, utility, paving, and erosion-control documents, together with geotechnical information, specifications, addenda, and the defined limit of work.
